Biography

Dr. Roger Kaldawy is one of Massachusetts most prominent eye physicians and surgeons and the area’s only full-time specialist in corneal diseases.  He is co-owner and managing partner of Milford Franklin Eye Center. He is also the Medical Director of the Cataract and Laser Surgery Center of Milford.

Dr. Kaldawy completed his training in Ophthalmology at University of Rochester and his fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the prestigious Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Iowa.  This program has been consistently ranking among the best 10 in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings of Best Hospitals for Ophthalmology.  Dr. Kaldawy is also one of the rare ophthalmologists in America to have undergone double training in both Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology.  Upon completion of his training, Dr. Kaldawy served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Boston University where he was Director of the Cornea and External Disease program and trained fellows and residents in Ophthalmology.  Some of his trainees are now in academic and private practices in Massachusetts and around the world.  Dr Kaldawy published research articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. One of his groundbreaking research papers on apoptosis and keratoconus was cited in over 131 PubMed Central articles and translated into many languages around the world.  Dr. Kaldawy has been invited as a guest speaker to many prestigious academic programs in the US and around the world including University of New York, Stanford University and University of Madison, Wisconsin.

Having started a full corneal transplantation service locally, Dr. Kaldawy is proud to be the first surgeon in central Massachusetts and among a handful of surgeons in the State to perform DSAEK corneal transplantation. With special interest in cataract surgery, Dr. Kaldawy has performed tens of thousands of procedures and was the first surgeon in the area to offer the highly advanced accommodating implants. Dr. Kaldawy is the first and only surgeon in the area to offer bladeless laser-assisted Femto cataract surgery.  This laser procedure is offered locally at the Milford Cataract and Laser Surgery Center.

Having completed fellowship training in refractive surgery, Dr. Kaldawy is an expert in the field and has trained other Doctors to perform laser vision correction. Dr. Kaldawy has hosted many ophthalmologists seeking to advance their skills in cataract surgery including local ophthalmologists and academic groups from Yale University.

Dr. Kaldawy is proud to have grown Milford Franklin Eye Center into a regional Ophthalmology referral center of excellence in eye care with 4 ophthalmologists, 2 optometrists and over 50 staff members.  This is one of the few centers in Massachusetts to own and operate its own outpatient ambulatory surgery center.

Dr. Kaldawy is a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, an Associate Member of the American College of Physicians-The American Society of Internal Medicine, a contributor to the certification and recertification program of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Member of the American Medical Association, a Member of the Academy of Medicine of Richmond, a Member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, a Member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, a Member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and a Member of the National Keratoconus Foundation. Dr. Kaldawy has also written part of the textbooks residents in Ophthalmology review to prepare for their Board tests in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Kaldawy holds admitting privileges at the Milford Regional Medical Center, the Steward Norwood Hospital, Surgisite Boston and the Cataract and Laser Surgery Center of Milford where he serves as Medical Director. 

Dr. Kaldawy is fluent in 3 languages, enjoys hiking, biking, classical music and the Opera. Dr Kaldawy is particularly proud of his outreach program “Vision Without Borders” that he started with his daughter Nataly Kaldawy and has provided free eye care for refugees of wars in countries around the world.
